Chalkboard Technique

Q: I love seeing new techniques used for stamping. Can you tell me more about the Chalkboard technique?
Chalboard Technique

A:  You hit right on a very popular trend in the papercrafting world! The Chalkboard or Faux Chalk Art technique is a fun twist on the basic resist technique. It creates the vintage look of old chalkboards, chalkboard art, and advertising.  Here’s how you can create the Chalkboard Technique…

Supplies:
Card Stock:  Basic Black (or use Garden Green or Not Quite Navy for the look of old green and blue chalkboards)
Ink:  VersaMark, Whisper White Craft ink, ink matching the colour of your card stock
Other:  Heat Tool, White Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Embossing Buddy, Watercolor Pencils (White Pencil), Stamping Sponges, ruler (clear is best)

Step 1:  Rub card stock with Embossing Buddy. Stamp images with VersaMark ink. Heat emboss with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder. (Try stamps such as: Amazing Family (#129189 wood, #129192 clear) pg. 7 of Spring Catalogue or Forever with You (#126725 wood, #126727 clear) pg. 132 of Annual Catalogue.)

Step 2:  Sponge edges of card stock with matching colour to create contrast. Wipe off excess ink with tissue.  Lightly sponge around embossed images and in blank areas with Whisper White Craft ink. Sponge some areas darker and some lighter to create the look of chalk dust.

Step 3:
Use a ruler or freehand draw lines through or above and below stamped images with the White Watercolor Pencil. Draw a border 1/4″ from each edge of the card stock with the White Watercolor Pencil to create a frame around the chalkboard. Remember this is all “chalk” drawing on a board so being perfectly neat isn’t necessary!

OPTIONAL:
If desired go back and shadow stamp over embossed images with Whisper White Craft ink. By stamping over, but slightly off center of the original image you create a blurred shadow effect. Allow craft ink to dry.

Step 4:  Embellish with vintage items such as bits of Doily, ribbon, Delicate Details Lace Tape (#130966), Paper Doilies (#129399), Linen Thread (#104199), Baker’s Twine, buttons, or pieces from the Artisan Embellishments Kit (#129328).

Elegant Wedding Card Video

A while back I showed you an elegant wedding card for a special couple.

I made a video to show you step by step how to make this card.

If you are attending a wedding this summer, making a card such as this one is sure to make the couple feel very special. Hand made lets them know you care because you spent time making it just for them. The hand written note inside will add to that also.

The supplies are listed at the end of the video.

You can purchase everything you need to make this elegant wedding card at my Stampin’ Up! online store.

How to Clean Rubber Stamps

So now you have  stamps to make beautiful cards and other projects. You have use them but how do you clean rubber stamps?

When using Classic Stampin’ Pads:

You can use baby wipes and they do a pretty good job. However, they don’t clean in the details and having some wetness on my desk doesn’t work well for me.

Stampin' Scrub to clean your rubber stampsI much prefer to use the Stampin’ Mist (item #102394) and Stampin’ Scrub (item#126200) from Stampin’ Up! to clean my stamps after using a Classic Stampin’ Pad – which is most of the time.

  1. First, I like to stamp on scrap paper to get rid of most of the ink on the stamp. This, however, is not enough to completely clean rubber stamps. If you try to use it again, especially with a light ink, you will see that there is still ink on the stamp.
  2. Spray some Stampin’ Mist on the Stampin’ Scrub. Rub the stamp back and forth on that side of the scrub.
  3. Rub the stamp on the other side of the Stampin’ Scrub to dry it completely before putting it away (very important – make sure your stamps are completely dry before storing them).

The new Stampin’ Scrub is larger, making it easier for you to clean large stamps such as background stamps.

When using StazOn ink:

If you have used StazOn ink, you need to use the StazOn cleaner.

***Do not use your every day scrub with that cleaner!*** The StazOn cleaner has an oily substance and you don’t want to mix it with the Stampin’ Mist. The bottle has its own “scrubber” on the tip. I use paper towel to completely dry the stamp afterwards.

If you are cleaning a stamp on a clear block, make sure there is no more trace of the oily residue on the block.

If you have any other questions about how to clean your stamps, contact me.

A Birthday Card Tutorial

birthday card tutorial with Betsy's Blooms stamp set

This birthday card with Betsy’s Blossoms stamp set is quite striking but really quite simple to make. It does require a few steps and I have included them all in this  birthday card tutorial for you.

Birthday Card Tutorial: Get it here.

The birthday greeting is from Itty Bitty Banners stamp set and it matches the Bitty Banners framelits so perfectly. Stamp your greeting on Whisper White card stock first, then place the framelit around it. Run through the big shot machine and it’s cut so neatly and precisely for you. I used markers on the stamp for the two colour effect.

I also used the Betsy’s Blooms wheel in pool party. It coordinates so well with Betsy’s Blossoms stamp set. Love that! Wheels are so easy to use. Pop them into the handle, roll over the ink pad and then roll onto your paper.

Everyone has a birthday and it’s great to have cards on hand ready to give away.  So you may want to set a time and make several of them at one sitting. Then you will be all prepared.

Check out some tips about sending cards here.

Do you need supplies for birthday cards? Check my online store anytime of the day or night, wherever you are in Canada.
